<h2>What Does MPa Mean in Concrete?</h2>
<p>MPa stands for <strong>megapascal</strong>, a unit used to express concrete’s compressive strength. In Australia, normal-class concrete is commonly ordered as N20, N25, N32, N40 or N50. The number represents its characteristic compressive strength in MPa at 28 days.</p>
<p>For example, <strong>N32</strong> is normal-class concrete with a specified 28-day characteristic strength of 32 MPa. That number is important, but it does not describe the entire mix. <h2>Is a Higher MPa Always Better?</h2>
<p>No. Higher strength may be necessary for load, durability or service-life requirements, but it should not be used as a substitute for proper design. Increasing the grade can change cost, heat generation, shrinkage behaviour, finishing characteristics and the environmental impact of the mix.</p>
<p>The best concrete is the mix that satisfies the complete project specification and can be placed, compacted, finished and cured correctly. An unnecessarily high grade does not correct poor reinforcement placement, inadequate cover, weak subgrade preparation or poor curing.</p>

<h2>What Is Concrete Slump?</h2>
<p>Slump is a site measure of the concrete’s <strong>consistency and workability</strong>. In simple terms, it helps describe how readily fresh concrete will flow and be placed. Normal-class concrete in Australia can be specified with target slumps from 20 mm to 120 mm in 10 mm increments.</p>
<p>A lower-slump mix is stiffer. A higher-slump mix is more workable, which can be helpful for pumping, congested reinforcement or difficult placement. However, the correct slump must be selected with the supplier and project team for the actual placement method and finish.</p>

<h3>Does Higher Slump Mean Weaker Concrete?</h3>
<p>Not automatically. A mix can be designed to achieve higher workability using its proportions and approved admixtures while still achieving the specified strength. The problem is <strong>uncontrolled water added on site</strong>. Extra water changes the designed water-to-cement ratio and can reduce strength and durability while increasing the risk of shrinkage, cracking, dusting and inconsistent colour.</p>
<p>If the delivered slump is outside the permitted range, the response should follow the supplier’s quality procedures and project specification. Water or admixture adjustments should only occur with proper authorisation and control—not simply because the crew wants the mix wetter.</p>

<h2>Aggregate Size Matters Too</h2>
<p>Normal-class concrete is commonly specified with a maximum nominal aggregate size of 10, 14 or 20 mm, with 20 mm being the usual default when another size is not nominated.</p>
<p>Aggregate size affects more than appearance. It can influence pumpability, placement around congested steel, finishing, concrete cover and the final surface texture. Smaller aggregate may be appropriate in thin sections or tightly reinforced areas, while 20 mm aggregate is widely used in conventional structural concrete where the geometry allows it.</p>

<h2>How to Read a Basic Concrete Order</h2>
<p>A concrete order may be written in a form similar to <strong>N32 / 20 / 100</strong>. Always confirm the supplier’s notation, but this commonly communicates:</p>

<li><strong>20:</strong> 20 mm maximum nominal aggregate.</li>

<h2>Does Coloured Concrete Affect Strength?</h2>
<p>Colour is an aesthetic selection, not a strength grade. Integral coloured concrete uses pigments—commonly mineral oxides—blended through the mix. The concrete must still be specified by its required MPa, slump, aggregate, exposure and other performance requirements.</p>
<p>When a coloured mix is properly designed and supplied, colour can be incorporated without changing the required structural grade. What homeowners often notice is variation in the <em>appearance</em> of the finished surface. Final colour can be influenced by natural aggregates, cement, moisture, finishing, curing, sealing, weather and viewing conditions.</p>
<p>For that reason, a digital colour chart should be treated as a guide. Physical samples, consistent batching and placement, appropriate curing and a planned sealing system are important when appearance matters.</p>

<h2>Exposure and Durability Can Be More Important Than MPa Alone</h2>
<p>A slab near the coast, an industrial floor exposed to abrasion, concrete in aggressive soil and an internal residential slab do not face the same conditions. The engineer may specify a minimum strength together with concrete cover, cementitious requirements, maximum water-to-cement ratio, shrinkage limits or other special-class properties.</p>
<p>This is why choosing concrete from the structure’s name alone can be misleading. “Driveway concrete” or “slab concrete” is not a complete technical specification.</p>

<p>Even correctly specified concrete can underperform if it is handled poorly. Reliable results depend on:</p>
